Vivian Fishbone - "Early Works"
January 15 through February 21

Opening Reception Saturday, January 23, 4PM to 7PM
Artist Talk Sunday, February 21 beginning at 2PM

Having come from a family of artists, as a young woman, Vivian Fishbone chose to study at Skidmore College for its superior art department.  Under pressure from her parents to study in a field that would allow her to be self supporting, she changed her major from art to biology and upon graduation, worked for several years as a medical research technician at Rockefeller Institute, University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson Medical College. Throughout this period, Vivian Fishbone continued to paint during her free time. Her background in biology often comes through in her more contemporary pieces.

Once her children had grown, Fishbone found herself able to turn to serious art. Her work at this time has been described by her as representational, figurative and akin to realism. Seeking a superior level of instruction, she enrolled in Art Students League in NYC, where she had the opportunity to study with many accomplished artists.  The most influential and inspiring were Richard Pousette-Dart, Theodoros Stamos, Will Barnet, Yaclav Vytlacil and Leo Manso.  She started with representational portraits and figure studies in oil, and slowly worked her way through expressionism, impressionism, cubism, hard edged abstraction and color field painting to her current works in acrylic on canvas, paper and wood. The work on display at Connexions Gallery is representational of the work of this period in her evolution as an artist and serves as a bridge between Vivian Fishbone's early figure works into the abstract work that she is most recognized for today.

Throughout a career spanning several decades, Vivian Fishbone has had 25 one-woman shows in New York City, Philadelphia, Harrisburg and the Lehigh Valley. She has received numerous awards throughout her career including Best in Show at the Hunterdon Museum. Connexions Gallery is pleased to be able to offer a glimpse into an the early portion of such a distinguished artists career.
